If something goes wrong

Here is what you can do yourself — and who to call. Better to call once too often than to wait until tomorrow.

The contact details are shown only to the host and to a guest with a booking for this house.

The power is out

  1. Check the fuse box to see whether a fuse has blown. It is usually in the hallway, the utility room or a cupboard.
  2. Turn off the appliance that was on when the power went — then reset the fuse.
  3. If the power is still out, or the whole area is dark, call the host. For a larger outage, your electricity supplier will say so on its website.

Water is running — or not coming

  1. Shut off the water at the main valve. The host explains above where it is. Closing the water stops the damage from getting worse.
  2. Dry up the water with towels and move things away from the floor.
  3. If no water comes out of the tap, first check whether the main valve is closed. Then call the host.

The heating is not working

  1. Check that the heat pump or boiler is switched on and that the thermostats are at a normal level.
  2. If there is firewood, the wood stove can heat most of the rooms. Read the host’s note on the heating above before changing settings you do not know.
  3. A cold house is a fault that must be fixed — not something you should put up with. Call the host.

The key does not fit

  1. First try turning the key the other way, and look for a second lock in the door. Many holiday homes have two.
  2. Check that you are at the right door. The back door and the patio door may have a different lock.
  3. If the key still does not fit, call the host and find somewhere sheltered to wait. Your booking stands, even if the key is playing up.

You are arriving late

  1. Call or write to the host as soon as you know you are delayed. Then the host knows the house is not standing empty.
  2. If you arrive after dark, bring a torch. Many holiday homes have no street lights.
  3. If a key box or a place for the key has been agreed, read the agreement again before you call.
